Not in pledges that go quiet — in signed partnership agreements, named investment funds, and hiring drives that are already underway. Cloud consulting has gone from a niche technology practice to one of the most active headcount areas across Deloitte, KPMG, EY, and PwC.
If you are targeting a tech role at one of these firms, it helps to understand exactly what is happening — which platforms each firm is building on, what job titles actually appear in their listings, and what it takes to break in.
Where Each Firm Is Placing Its Bets
Each firm has taken a meaningfully different approach to cloud, and that shapes what they hire for.
KPMG committed to a $2 billion Microsoft alliance to embed Azure and Microsoft AI across audit, tax, and advisory. KPMG's cloud practice is built almost entirely around the Microsoft stack — Azure OpenAI, Power Platform, Dynamics 365. If Azure certifications are your focus, this is the most natural home.
PwC split its bets more boldly. A $1 billion generative AI push centred on OpenAI, combined with a $400 million commitment to Google Cloud as part of Google's 2026 partner fund. PwC became OpenAI's first enterprise reseller, which means their cloud work increasingly involves building client-facing solutions on top of GPT-4 and Azure OpenAI — with GCP running data and analytics workstreams in parallel.
EY deployed $250 million into AI and cloud partnerships with Microsoft and OpenAI. EY's cloud work sits inside its Technology Strategy & Transformation practice, where Cloud & Platform Engineers operate across Azure and AWS on multi-year enterprise programmes for financial services and industrial clients.
Deloitte made the largest single commitment in Google's $750 million Cloud AI partner fund in 2026, while simultaneously running large AWS and Azure practices. Deloitte's Cloud Engineering team covers the full multi-cloud stack — AWS EKS and CloudFormation, Azure DevOps, GCP infrastructure — alongside a dedicated Cloud Security Engineering team operating across all three platforms.
None of the four firms is platform-exclusive. The multi-cloud reality means professionals who can operate across two or more providers consistently command around a 30% salary premium over single-platform specialists.
The Four Role Types You Will Actually See
Big 4 cloud job descriptions tend to cluster around four distinct types:
Cloud Engineer / AWS Cloud Engineer: Hands-on infrastructure work — deploying workloads, managing container platforms like EKS and AKS, automating with Terraform and CloudFormation. The most common entry point for candidates from software engineering or infrastructure backgrounds. Deloitte, EY, and KPMG all post this role type regularly.
Cloud & Platform Engineer (Technology Strategy): A hybrid role combining engineering with a client-facing component. You design and implement cloud solutions while translating architecture decisions for senior business stakeholders. Closer to consulting than pure engineering — and typically better compensated for it.
Cloud Security Engineer: Hardening cloud environments across AWS, GCP, and Azure — IAM configuration, architecture reviews, compliance mapping against SOC 2 or ISO 27001. Growing fast as the Big 4 win more mandates from regulated industries like financial services, healthcare, and insurance.
Cloud Architect / Lead Cloud Engineer: Senior roles spanning multiple cloud service providers, designing enterprise-grade cloud management platforms. Usually requires 5+ years in cloud plus architecture-level certifications. These appear most frequently at Deloitte and KPMG at manager-to-senior-manager grade.

The Certifications That Actually Open Doors
Big 4 recruiters are not expecting new graduates to hold five cloud certifications. But the right one — or two — signals genuine hands-on intent in a way that coursework alone does not.
AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate: The most widely recognised entry-level cloud credential globally. It appears explicitly in EY, Deloitte, and PwC job descriptions. A solid starting point if you are unsure which platform to prioritise — AWS has more global job listings than Azure or GCP and is particularly strong in consulting and SaaS contexts.
Microsoft Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104): Particularly valuable for KPMG given their $2B Microsoft commitment. Azure dominates Fortune 500 enterprise hiring — precisely the client base the Big 4 serves.
Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect: Worth pursuing if you are targeting Deloitte or PwC. Google's $750M partner fund in 2026 means GCP-skilled candidates are increasingly in demand inside both firms.
AWS Security Specialty / AZ-500: If the Cloud Security Engineer path appeals, pairing a security certification with your associate-level credential is a strong differentiator. EY and PwC both reference security certifications (CISSP, AWS Security Specialty) in their senior associate listings.
The honest caveat: certifications open the door; they do not win the interview. Recruiters at this level want evidence you have actually built something — a personal project on AWS, a Terraform module on GitHub, a migration you contributed to during an internship. The cert shows you understand the concepts; the portfolio shows you can apply them.
Breaking In Early
The associate and analyst levels at Big 4 cloud practices are designed for people early in their careers, including recent graduates. What firms need at that level is not a senior architect — it is someone who can deploy infrastructure, follow architectural patterns, document their work clearly, and communicate with clients under guidance.
The most practical route for students: pick one platform, get the associate-level cert, and build one portfolio project that uses it. A three-tier web app deployed to AWS with Terraform, documented on a public GitHub repo, is more persuasive than a list of completed online courses. Pair that with attendance at Big 4 tech-focused recruiting events — most firms run cloud-specific sessions aimed at early-career candidates, and they are usually free.
If you are concerned about degree requirements, do not be — most Big 4 tech roles at associate level are open to non-CS graduates, and cloud consulting is one of the areas the firms have been most explicit about this.
Cloud + AI: The Direction Everything Is Moving
Cloud and AI are converging fast at the Big 4. The reason Deloitte made its largest-ever commitment to Google Cloud was not about storage capacity — it was about agentic AI deployments for enterprise clients. Cloud consultants who also understand AI infrastructure — model deployment, inference optimisation, RAG architecture, vector databases — are already a tier ahead. It is not a requirement to land your first role, but it is clearly the direction the practice is heading.
